It\u2019s a task to see everything Las Vegas offers in live entertainment. It\u2019s even task-ier to whittle down your list to those deserving special attention. We\u2019re doing just that with our Lucky 7-Pack of shows to catch this year.<\/p>\n

This list covers some expected terrain, and some productions that are under the city\u2019s carriage, but there is not a dud in the bunch. Cue the orchestra:<\/p>\n

\u2018Mavericks\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

I will die on this mountain \u2014 or in this showroom \u2014 arguing that downtown can support a top-level residency production. Creator Amy Saunders is putting on a world-class comedy, circus, burlesque and variety show. She is the mistress of ceremonies, a fantastic improv comic who is also an impressive sword-swallower.<\/p>\n

The acts rotate (in more ways than one) and play into the crowd. We have jugglers, a zombie-hand act, some sexy magic and cheap FizzyWater.<\/p>\n

No two \u201cMavericks\u201d shows are alike, other than they are affordable, starting at $35 a pop. As Saunders says, \u201cWe\u2019re not putting a story over the top of anything. You\u2019re gonna walk into a beautiful room that you are going to enjoy being in. We will be on stage going, \u2018Hello, I see you. Up for a good time? Here\u2019s a great act. Hey, again, here\u2019s another great act. Hey, the bars are really cheap. P.S., here\u2019s another great act.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

This is among the last authentic Vegas showroom experiences, on the very parcel where the city was born. Get there.<\/p>\n

Penn & Teller<\/span><\/p>\n

You only celebrate a 50th anniversary once. P&T are at that point in \u201925, touring Australia (beginning with eight shows at the Sydney Opera House) through February, playing a one-off at New York\u2019s Radio City Music Hall in August and headlining an 11-show run at the London Palladium in September. They continue to anchor the Rio, their Las Vegas performance home since January 2001. And the 11th season of \u201cPenn & Teller: Fool Us\u201d premieres Jan. 24 with a 50th-anniversary episode.<\/p>\n

What else? Ah, the guys are featured in \u201cBeyond Saturday Night,\u201d a four-part doc about \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d premiering this week on Peacock. P&T were featured eight times on \u201cThe Weird Year\u201d of 1985. But the show survived, and obviously so have Penn & Teller.<\/p>\n

\u2018Mad Apple\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

In May 2022, Cirque du Soleil downsized and went with an NYC theme at New York-New York. Skeptics thought this show was too meager to replace \u201cZumanity,\u201d which had run there at double the scale. But the rapid-fire acts, comedy, live music and (again) variety have over time made this a Cirque hit.<\/p>\n

Bob Marley Hope Road<\/span><\/p>\n

The walk-around experience dedicated to the spirit of Bob Marley opens this summer at the former Bayside Buffet space at Mandalay Bay.<\/p>\n

The reggae legend\u2019s son Ziggy Marley is co-producer of Hope Road, which is set to be open seven days a week with two attractions.<\/p>\n

Hope Road by Day is a walk-through, multisensory experience with digital and analog installations, musical and visual effects to bring Bob Marley\u2019s messages of truth, freedom and \u201cone love\u201d to the fore. Hope Road by Night is an intimate live show buoyed by Marley\u2019s music, with a cast of performers \u201crepresenting the kaleidoscope that is humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dita Von Teese<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cQueen of Burlesque\u201d returns to The Venetian\u2019s Voltaire nightspot at the end of this month. She is full glam in costumes from the \u201cJubilee\u201d collection. The show pops more effectively than it did at the Jubilee Theatre at the Horseshoe, formerly Bally\u2019s and home to \u201cJubilee,\u201d the lavish showgirl production that ended its three-decade run in 2016.<\/p>\n

Several of Von Teese\u2019s backing dancers appear in Pamela Anderson\u2019s new Las Vegas-set big-screen drama \u201cThe Last Showgirl,\u201d but Von Teese\u2019s show is not a traditional showgirl production. She blends her burlesque striptease with a cast of all shapes and sizes (and genders). The result is beautiful \u2014 a chic, classy, only-in-Vegas experience.<\/p>\n

New Kids on the Block<\/span><\/p>\n

The original boy band is reassembling for a run at Dolby Live at Park MGM. Dubbed \u201cThe Right Stuff,\u201d the residency covers two dozen dates from Valentine\u2019s Day through Nov. 15. Jonathan Knight, Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood are all back in action for this run.<\/p>\n

As Wahlberg said when the series was announced in September: \u201cIt\u2019s crazy. It\u2019s surreal. It\u2019s something we talked about when we were kids, \u2018One day when we\u2019re old and retired, we\u2019ll go there.\u2019 Well, we ain\u2019t retired, and we ain\u2019t retiring, and we\u2019re here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Awakening\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

The show for which \u201cIt\u2019s a lot!\u201d is an understatement enters its third year. Maybe you can\u2019t keep up with all the action in this exercise in technical overkill. But \u201cAwakening\u201d stands alone in its grandiosity and self-confidence in this massive residency production.<\/p>\n

Baz Halpin\u2019s sense of aesthetics, Michael Curry\u2019s puppetry, the magic touch of Bernie Yuman and support engineered by Wynn Las Vegas CEO Craig Billings and entertainment director Rick Gray have kept \u201cAwakening\u201d in play. We expect more modifications this spring.<\/p>\n

Similar to the pushback that \u201cMad Apple\u201d has overcome at New York-New York, \u201cAwakening\u201d has experienced an undercurrent of doubt in stepping in for \u201cLe Reve\u201d at Wynn. This is the year we learn if \u201cAwakening\u201d was a noble, $120 million experiment or is here for the long term. I\u2019m betting on the latter.<\/p>\n
