Las Vegas police allege that a man from Santa Fe broke into a Las Vegas elementary school building after driving drunk and crashing into a gate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Police arrested 37-year-old James C. Naranjo on Jan. 6 outside Sierra Vista Elementary School on Legion Drive after Naranjo called 911 and said he\u2019d been in a car crash and didn\u2019t know where he was, according to a criminal complaint filed in San Miguel Magistrate Court.<\/span><\/p>\n

Officers with the Las Vegas Police Department arrived at the school around 9:30 p.m. that evening and located an unoccupied Toyota Tacoma that had crashed into a locked gate and a wall, according to the complaint.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

LVPD officers found a door to the elementary school open, but did not find anyone inside. Officers later located Naranjo outside the building with bloodshot eyes and the smell of alcohol on his breath, the complaint stated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Police detained Naranjo, and after paramedics checked him for injuries, officers administered a series of sobriety tests, which Naranjo performed poorly on, according to the complaint. Naranjo told police he\u2019d had four beers and two shots.<\/span><\/p>\n

Officers administered alcohol breath tests on Naranjo. One test indicated his blood alcohol content was 0.25; a second test showed a BAC of 0.23, the complaint stated. Under New Mexico law, the threshold for a DWI charge is .08.<\/span><\/p>\n

Naranjo was arrested and charged with felony breaking and entering and criminal damage to property as well as misdemeanor charges of aggravated DWI and possession of an open container.<\/span><\/p>\n

During a Jan. 7 hearing, Judge Philip Leger set an unsecured $12,000 bond for Naranjo and placed him on house arrest. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Feb. 4 in San Miguel Magistrate Court.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
