{"id":1690,"date":"2025-02-02T19:10:12","date_gmt":"2025-02-03T03:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stand77.biz\/category\/casino-resorts\/50-years-ago-today-classic-las-vegas\/"},"modified":"2025-02-02T19:10:12","modified_gmt":"2025-02-03T03:10:12","slug":"50-years-ago-today-classic-las-vegas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stand77.biz\/category\/casino-resorts\/50-years-ago-today-classic-las-vegas\/","title":{"rendered":"50 Years Ago Today \u2014 Classic Las Vegas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">                   \u201cBut the world all stopped to watch it, yeah, on that July afternoon,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;white-space:pre-wrap;\" class=\"\">They watched a man named Armstrong walk upon the moon&#8221;\u00a0 John Stewart, &#8220;<em>Armstrong<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;white-space:pre-wrap;\" class=\"\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Has it really been fifty years?\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t seem that long ago.\u00a0 But the calendar and the television specials all say that fifty years have passed since that fateful day on July 20th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">On May 25th, 1961,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about\/presidents\/JohnFKennedy\/\" title=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about\/presidents\/JohnFKennedy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong><em>President Kennedy<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0had said &#8220;First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">America rolled up its sleeves and got out its slide rules.\u00a0 We had put<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alan_Shepard\" title=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alan_Shepard\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong><em>\u00a0Alan Shepard<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0into space and J<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Glenn\" title=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Glenn\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong><em>ohn Glenn\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>was slated to go next.\u00a0 The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/history.nasa.gov\/40thmerc7\/intro.htm\" title=\"http:\/\/history.nasa.gov\/40thmerc7\/intro.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong><em>Mercury Astronauts<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0caught not only the imagination of the country but of the world.\u00a0 Every little boy and girl it seemed wanted to either be the Beatles or an astronaut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I wanted to be an astronaut but slide-rules and math confounded the crap out of me.\u00a0 And they still do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">We rolled out of bed in the early, early hours of the morning to watch the launches, breaths held as the countdown went down to zero and the button was pushed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Televisions were rolled into schoolrooms around the country, including Las Vegas, so that we could track their progress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The Mercury astronauts gave way to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov\/history\/gemini\/gemini.htm\" title=\"http:\/\/www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov\/history\/gemini\/gemini.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong><em>Gemini Project<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Higgins_White\" title=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Higgins_White\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong><em>Ed White<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>became the first American to walk in space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Each step brought us closer to the goal of going to the moon.\u00a0 All of this during a decade of turmoil and conflict the likes of which this country hadn&#8217;t seen in a hundred years.\u00a0 The Civil Rights movement, the loss of JFK, the Vietnam War, the youth movement, free speech, the anti-war movement, the silent majority are part of our history of the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But through it all, even in the dark days (and we had our share of dark, dark days back then), the resolve to complete JFK&#8217;s dream of putting a man on the moon by the end of the decade stayed strong.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">We lost Mercury astronaut\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/history.nasa.gov\/Apollo204\/zorn\/grissom.htm\" title=\"http:\/\/history.nasa.gov\/Apollo204\/zorn\/grissom.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong><em>Virgil &#8220;Gus&#8221; Grissom<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the beloved Ed White and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsc.nasa.gov\/Bios\/htmlbios\/chaffee-rb.html\" title=\"http:\/\/www.jsc.nasa.gov\/Bios\/htmlbios\/chaffee-rb.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong><em>Roger Chaffee<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0on the launch pad in the\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/history.nasa.gov\/SP-4029\/Apollo_01c_Timeline.htm\" title=\"http:\/\/history.nasa.gov\/SP-4029\/Apollo_01c_Timeline.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong><em>Apollo One<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0fire in 1967 and for a brief moment our resolve wavered.\u00a0 But instead of scraping the idea, NASA and the country moved forward determined to solve the problems and hold the course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In December of 1968,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.astronautix.com\/flights\/apollo8.htm\" title=\"http:\/\/www.astronautix.com\/flights\/apollo8.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong><em>\u00a0Apollo Eight<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0with Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Williams Anders became, not only the first Americans,\u00a0<strong>but the first ever<\/strong>\u00a0to orbit the moon.\u00a0 That Christmas Eve they read Bible passages to the world from outer space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">As the 1960s were coming to a close, the decade seemed to be imploding on itself.\u00a0 What had once seemed like a shining, optimistic beacon had become the very opposite.\u00a0 Death, violence and drugs had taken over and the decade seemed like it was spiraling out of control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But on a July afternoon in 1969, that shining optimism was recaptured and reborn as the Lunar Module with Neil Armstrong and &#8220;Buzz&#8221; Aldrin landed on the moon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Around the world, people stopped what they were doing to watch history being made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In Las Vegas, it was a Sunday afternoon\/early evening..\u00a0 At our house in Charleston Heights, we stopped and watched.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In the casinos on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.classiclasvegas.squarespace.com\/downtown-history\/\" title=\"http:\/\/classiclasvegas.squarespace.com\/downtown-history\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong><em>Fremont Street<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.classiclasvegas.squarespace.com\/a-brief-history-of-the-strip\/\" title=\"www.classiclasvegas.squarespace.com\/a-brief-history-of-the-strip\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><strong><em>Las Vegas Strip<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a>, gamblers were doing what they do best, gambling away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Televisions had been set up around the casinos on both Fremont Street and the Strip so that patrons could watch if they wanted to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Growing up in Las Vegas, we all know how difficult it is to get gamblers away from the tables and we know the stories of how it is next to impossible to get people to leave slot machines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But on the Sunday  up and down Fremont Street and up and down the Strip, they did just that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">They stopped gambling to watch Neil Armstrong descend from the lunar module and &#8220;take one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind&#8221; before erupting in applause and tears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It was a shared historic moment felt the world over and that included Las Vegas.
