Golden Gate Hotel & Casino marks 119 years as Vegas’ first hotel and casino landmark

The Golden Gate Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas’ first hotel, marked its 119th anniversary with a celebration that included a property tour, a happy hour, and an exploration of its storied past.

The hotel is located on the Fremont Street Experience and Main Street downtown.

Jeff Victor, vice president of the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino, emphasized the property’s historical significance, saying, “The original building was very small and only two stories. It’s grown over the years and so has Las Vegas. We’ve gone from dirt streets to paved. Of course, gaming isn’t in one small room anymore. It really started right here in this building.”

Victor described the Golden Gate’s longevity as a blessing, especially in an era when other major hotels face shutdowns or rebranding, noting the recent implosion of the Tropicana Hotel as an example.

The Golden Gate Hotel & Casino, which opened in 1906, is considered the birthplace of hotel and casino tourism in Las Vegas.
