LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A suspect fatally struck a bicyclist while trying to drive away from officers in east Las Vegas Wednesday morning, according to police.
The crash was reported around 7:33 a.m. near Stewart Ave and Lamb Blvd, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said in a press briefing.
Officers were trying to conduct a vehicle stop when the car fled from them and crashed into another car, a bicyclist before hitting a wall. The suspect driver was taken into custody.
Medical personnel pronounced the bicyclist dead at the scene, making it the first bicyclist killed in Metro’s jurisdiction in 2025.
The driver of the car his was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. As of 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, traffic remained shut down in all directions at the intersection of Lamb and Stewart Avenue.
“The protocol, so in this case our officer attempted to conduct a vehicle stop where the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed,” Deputy Chief Branden Clarkson said. “By the time our officer caught up to the vehicle, it had already gotten into an accident at Lamb and Stewart and then struck a pedestrian.”
Metro Police have a pursuit policy that is 18 pages. The document states that officers engage in vehicular pursuits when necessary to protect citizens and their rights. A pursuit will “not be authorized for a property crime, minor traffic infraction or an occupied stolen vehicle.”
Data shows six traffic related crashes so far in Metro’s jurisdiction compared to eight at the same time last year.
