Sergeant needed 11 staples in his head after police shooting in Las Vegas Valley

HENDERSON, Nev. (FOX5) – A Henderson police sergeant involved in a shooting had to get 11 staples in his head, according to an arrest report.

The sergeant also shot the suspect in the arm. He was identified as 43-year-old Johnathan Gaston.

He was taken to the hospital for treatment as well before he was booked into the Henderson Detention Center.

The shooting happened at about 1 in the afternoon Monday near Boulder Highway and Lake Mead Parkway. The arrest report said it all started after license plate readers found a black Jeep Liberty with stolen plates in the area.

Sergeant Alward spotted the car in a nearby Panda Express parking lot. When he got out of his patrol car, the Jeep sped toward him. The arrest report said that’s when the sergeant shot at the Jeep five times, hitting the hood and windshield.

At least one of those bullets hit Gaston’s arm.

Gaston continued driving, hitting the sergeant and two other parked cars. The arrest report details he got out of the Jeep and ran into the nearby Chase Bank, leaving a trail of blood behind.

Other officers followed him and provided medical aid at the bank before he was taken to the hospital. Gaston was arrested and later taken to jail.

A second person was the Jeep. The arrest report said the passenger was not hurt in this shooting. He said he met Gaston earlier that day while getting a tattoo. Gaston offered him a ride to Henderson. They stopped at the Panda Express for lunch, then the shooting and subsequent car crash happened.

The arrest report noted the passenger did not know about the Jeep’s stolen license plates.

Gaston faces five charges in connection with this shooting:

  • Attempted murder of a police officer with a deadly weapon
  • Battery with a deadly weapon resulting in SBH (substantial bodily harm)
  • Resist public officer with a deadly weapon
  • Duty to stop at the scene of an accident
  • Buy/possess/receive stolen property

FOX5 Investigates dug into Gaston’s criminal history and learned this isn’t the first time Gaston is accused of car-related crimes.

Las Vegas Justice Court records show he was accused of having a stolen car back in September. He was on house arrest but didn’t show up to court hearings. A warrant was issued for Gaston’s arrest.
