Health officials urge precautions as flu activity rises in Las Vegas

Health officials are urging people to take precautions as more cases of flu and other respiratory illnesses are reported around the Las Vegas area.

The Southern Nevada Health District says 438 flu-related hospitalizations and seven deaths have been reported for this season through Dec. 28.

For comparison, the Health District reported 294 flu-related hospitalizations and 13 deaths during the same period the year before.

Community wastewater surveillance as of Jan. 8 also showed high concentrations of influenza A and RSV in Clark County, plus moderate concentrations of the virus that causes COVID-19.

SNHD recommends people get vaccinated and wash their hands frequently with soap to protect themselves.

If you are sick, there are treatments available for flu and COVID-19 that can reduce the risk of hospitalization or death.

Anyone who is sick is urged to stay home and avoid contact with others. Free COVID-19 self-test kits are available around Clark County as well.
