Death penalty sought against suspect in deadly Las Vegas Strip stabbing spree

Prosecutors say they are planning to seek the death penalty for the man charged with killing two people and injuring several others in a series of stabbings on the Las Vegas Strip in 2022.

The Clark County District Attorney’s Office on Wednesday filed a notice of intent to seek capital punishment against Yoni Barrios if he is convicted at trial.

In their notice, the prosecution wrote that it would present aggravating circumstances against Barrios, now 34, to warrant the death penalty, including the random nature of the alleged attack.

Barrios is charged with 15 felony counts, including act of terrorism and two counts of murder. Authorities alleged he killed Maris DiGiovanni and Brent Hallett while on Las Vegas Boulevard and attacked six other people before he was taken into custody.

After two years of mental health treatment, a judge ruled last month that Barrios is competent to stand trial.

He has not yet entered a plea. His arraignment hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 9, after being postponed twice.
